Shop at these 6 Metro Detroit Clothing Stores

July 22, 2015

The Detroit aesthetic -what does it mean? Does it mean a product or design needs be certified by Kid Rock? Is it the look commonly found at Cheli's Chili before a Tigers' game? Or is it the look of gentrification?

What it's not is the (in)famous Detroit ruin porn. According to Dan Austin, editor of the architecture information site “Buildings of Detroit,” artists and photographers from all over the world have contacted him for a Hades-like tour of Detroit’s ruins, from the Michigan Central Railroad Station to the Book-Cadillac Hotel.

But these parachute artists leave Detroit as quickly as they arrive. They do nothing for the city but contribute to its image of decay. The media may be trying to make 'ruin' Detroit’s brand, but those of use who live here in the city know that we're all beyond that.  Today there are numerous Detroit artists, designers and entrepreneurs whose visual language is about Detroit’s timelessness, creativity, and pride. Detroit is not Dan Gilbert or Jolly Pumpkin Pizzeria & Brewery.

Detroit is what it is, and these six metro Detroit retail stores are working hard to succeed amongst the influx of corporate-backed retail ventures. But what they lack in funding, they make up for in dedication to the local community and their support of local Detroit clothing brands. Here are 6 of our favorite local spots for Detroit apparel, homemade goods, sneakers, and more.

City Bird

Located in Midtown, City Bird was founded in 2005. Siblings and seventh-generation Detroiters Andy and Emily Linn produce Detroit and Great-Lakes themed clothing, accessories, housewares, and home decor. City Bird’s brand is on display at more than 50 retailers throughout the Great Lakes region. The store is at the forefront of Detroit fashion as it features works by hundreds of independent local artists and designers.

Willys Detroit

Willys Detroit is a 2,900-square foot concept store featuring Detroit and Michigan brands as well as “four classic American brands" – Filson, Steve Alan, Clare V, and Mollusk. Willys Detroit is the sister store of Shinola and part of a growing plan to augment the retail experience in Midtown. Detroit and Michigan-based brands on display include SMPLFD, Abigail Murry, and Debbie Carlos.

Detroit Clothing Circle

Detroit Clothing Circle is a resale store that restores the art in clothing. Clothing is the first line of expression for an individual, but in places like NY and LA, fashion boutiques charge people their first born for t-shirts or a pair of jeans. Detroit Clothing Circle keeps the prices honest and the selection fresh.

Burn Rubber

Burn Rubber specializes in sneakers, or as owners Rick Williams and Roland Coit like to put it… Fresh Kicks. All Day. Every Day. Since Williams and Coit took ownership of the 680-square foot shop in 2007, Burn Rubber has gone through many innovations. Burn Rubber has been featured in The Metro Times, Vapors Magazine, and the Lifestyle section of the Detroit News.
