CCS Valade Family Gallery in the Taubman Center is pleased to present "CARVED: Ancient Actions | Contemporary Strategies," curated by Chido Johnson, featuring works by Aisling Arrington, Alan Brown, Kurtis Greene, Nicholas Katsavrias, Ginny Martin, Nate Morgan, Fatima Sow and Dylan Spaysky. Opening Friday, February 7, 5-8pm. Free and open to the public. Exhibition runs through March 21.

K.OSS Contemporary Art Gallery (1410 Gratiot Ave, Detroit)

K.OSS Contemporary Art is pleased to present a collection of site-specific paper sculptures by German artist Angela Glajcar.

Angela Glajcar, a German sculptor of the 1970s, creates site-specific installations with paper, light and space. Her works reflect a study of the environment in which they are placed using an "extreme economy of means". In all these compositions there is "formal rigor, simplicity and transparency". The elegant purity of the compositions derive from the total absence of color, while their precision is determined by certain principles to which the artist strictly adheres.
Interested in the exploration of how space is experienced, the artist uses a technique she calls “terforation,” which stems from perforation (the Latin word for hole) and terra (the Latin word for earth). Alluding to terra incognita, Glajcar is interested in exploring unknown regions through her work.

KO Studio Gallery is excited to present "Signs Galore" a group show curated by Kelly Golden. This show highlights the rich history of sign painting featuring numerous artists working in Detroit today.

Hand painted signs preserve the cultural and economic identity of the communities in which they live. Using a combination of technical and artistic skills, sign painters craft character, personality, and identity from simple words and phrases. Over time, these signs come to represent far more than the information they convey- they enrich our understanding of the past and illuminate the future. As a testament to the power of creating things by hand, “Signs Galore!” is an exhibition celebrating sign painting in Detroit and highlighting the impactful role sign painters play in shaping the visual landscape of the city.
