SMPLFD X HOMES EYEWEAR COLLABORATION
Homes Eyewear creates custom sunglasses comprised of reclaimed wood from Detroit's constructed housing stock.
Below is a series of photos illustrating the sunglasses' journey; from the original site of the wood, to the reclaiming facilities, to the design lab and workshop where they are constructed.
The city has roughly 70,000 abandoned homes still standing, and within those contain plenty of usable materials with the potential to be recycled and repurposed. The boards we've chosen to use have been hand-picked by Homes at Reclaim Detroit. From there, the wood is taken to and processed in Eastern Market at the Homes design studio and workshop.
The construction of the sunglasses include a 60-step labor-intensive process that blends computer design, CNC technology, and hand-craftsmanship through traditional woodworking techniques.
